There’s a small group of Republicans who have already announced their candidacy for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination. Of the current field, only one man has any realistic chance of winning the primary. That man is former President Donald Trump. The former president’s appeal with the Republican base is solid.
Against the current list of contenders, no one envisions that stranglehold changing. However, if another man, someone who’s yet to announce his intentions, decides to enter the race, things will change. Most project Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to eventually announce his candidacy. However, current polls still have former President Trump holding a sizeable lead.
Many experts predict that the margin will tighten almost the instant the Florida governor makes a definitive announcement to run. Nevertheless, even though the name Ron DeSantis hasn’t even been thrown into the ring, the battle has begun. Many believe the real fight will start on the day the Florida governor officially becomes the biggest threat to former President Trump.
The two high-profile Republicans each seem to be digging in for a monumental battle. The former president has already slung arrows at the successful Florida governor. A super PAC promoting a run by Governor DeSantis is firing back. In a recent ad, the group asks why the former president is so focused on his potential opponent and not the true enemy.
During the televised advertisement, the narrator asks, “Why is he (former President Trump) spending millions attacking the Republican governor of Florida?” “Trump’s stealing pages from the Biden-Pelosi playbook, repeating lies about social security.” The ad cuts to the Florida governor speaking directly about social security and entitlements.
The super PAC ad ends with the narrator saying, “Trump should fight Democrats, not lie about Governor Ron DeSantis.” The ad ends with a direct question: “What happened to Donald Trump?” Many feel the purpose is to push back against a PAC MAGA Inc. release that referenced Governor DeSantis eating pudding with three fingers. Kind of silly, but this may be only a glimpse into an upcoming dogfight!
With no disrespect to the list of current Republican candidates, the best advice might be to gracefully bow out before the first primary ballot is cast. Their chances are minimal at best. The odds of any candidate other than former President Trump or Governor DeSantis earning the 2024 presidential nomination are essentially zero. It’s just a reality.
This will be a brutal head-to-head battle for the 2024 presidential nomination. However, the ultimate winner will face off for the soul of our nation. Whichever candidate emerges – former President Donald Trump or Florida Governor Ron DeSantis – Americans must put ideological differences aside. The fate of American democracy will be determined by that decision.
