Russian officials have referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as part of a “Kyiv terrorist regime” and are claiming to have prevented a Ukrainian attack on Russia. A top ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Zelensky’s home should be targeted to take him out personally, as a response to the alleged attempt on Putin’s life.
“After today’s terrorist attack, there are no options left other than the physical elimination of Zelensky and his clique,” Kremlin Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president under Putin, wrote on social media.
According to the spokesperson of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov’s office, there was an incident at the Kremlin involving two unmanned aerial vehicles. However, the incident did not result in any damage or casualties. State media was informed that Putin was not present at the time of the incident.
“We view these actions as a planned terrorist attack and an assassination attempt targeting the President,” Peskov’s office said. “Russia reserves the right to take countermeasures wherever and whenever it deems appropriate.”
According to Ukrainian officials, they did not carry out the operation and believe that it could have been done by Russian dissidents or could have even been a staged incident by the government. Zelensky clarified while on a trip to Finland that Ukraine is not attacking Putin or Moscow and is instead fighting to protect their own land and people. He also mentioned that they do not have enough weapons to engage in such attacks and that they would leave the matter for a tribunal to handle.
During a live event with the Washington Post, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed doubts about the Russian allegations but clarified that they don’t have enough information to confirm or deny them. Blinken explained that without knowing the facts, it’s difficult to comment or make assumptions about what really happened.
Zelensky’s team suggested that Putin would use the incident to justify a retaliatory operation. “Russia is clearly preparing a large-scale terrorist attack,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mikhailo Podolyak tweeted. “Ukraine wages an exclusively defensive war and does not attack targets on the territory of the Russian Federation. What for? This does not solve any military issue.”
The military conflict between Russia and Ukraine is escalating recklessly, involving major powers from different parts of the world. The risk of another world war has reached its highest point since the Cuban Missile Crisis during the current Biden administration.
