It appears that the political equivalent of a boxing match took place recently between House Speaker Mike Johnson and CNN anchor Jake Tapper. The issue? The border crisis under Joe Biden’s administration. And let me tell you, folks, it was a sight to behold. Johnson, along with several other House Republicans, had just returned from the southern border, where they witnessed the crisis first-hand.
During his interview with Tapper, Johnson insisted that Biden should visit the border himself. To this, Tapper weakly responded, “I think he went last year, just FYI.” Johnson quickly shot back, “Well, he went for a photo-op.”
Now, isn’t that just like our dear President Biden? Sure, he’ll go for the photo ops, but when it comes to actually dealing with the crisis at hand… well, that’s another story.
Johnson also pointed out the staggering number of immigrants who have entered the U.S. under Biden’s watch – at least 7 million. He argued that this is a national security concern, especially considering that hundreds of these immigrants were on the terrorist watchlist. Tapper, in his infinite wisdom, tried to downplay this by saying, “There aren’t hundreds of known terrorists getting into the country.”
Oh, Jake, do you really think we’re going to buy that? As Johnson rightly pointed out, “That’s the terrorist watchlist, Jake. It takes quite a bit to make that list, OK. These are dangerous people who are coming to the country.”
And then there was the discussion about immigration reform. Tapper claimed that “it always comes down to the House Republicans and what they’re willing to accept,” conveniently ignoring Johnson’s observations of how Biden is failing Americans on immigration.
“We can seal the border. We could do it overnight. The president has the existing authority under existing federal law to do that, and he refuses to do it,” Johnson said. But Tapper, ever the apologist, claimed, “It’s really up to Congress.”
The conversation ended with a discussion about a $14 billion supplemental spending package for the border, which Tapper claimed Border Patrol agents want. Johnson quickly corrected him, stating, “I just quoted to the deputy chief of U.S. Border Patrol. And he said he doesn’t need more buckets…he needs to turn the flow off.”
