Even though we don’t hear about the problems with Dominion Voting Systems, there are still court cases going on regarding this and it just got really good. Apparently, Professor J. Alex Halderman, a renowned election expert from the University of Michigan, managed to hack into a Dominion Voting Machine Tabulator right in front of Judge Amy Totenberg in a Georgia courtroom. And get this – he did it using nothing but a pen! If that doesn’t make you question the security of our voting systems, I don’t know what will.
So, how did we get here? Well, back in June 2023, a report was unsealed in the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. This report, known as the Halderman Report, revealed some pretty unsettling stuff about Georgia’s ImageCast X Ballot Marking Devices. These devices, supplied by Dominion Voting Systems, apparently have some serious security vulnerabilities.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. The Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, had been sitting on this report for two years. Why, you ask? Well, that’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it?
What we do know is that the report found that the Dominion software can be hacked and votes can be altered. That’s right, folks. Our voting system is about as secure as a screen door on a submarine. After the release of the report, Halderman claimed that Raffensperger wouldn’t install Dominion’s security patches before the 2024 election. Now, I don’t claim to be an expert, but that seems like a pretty big oversight, don’t you think?
So, what happens now? Well, the lawsuit continues. The plaintiffs are pushing to replace these insecure voting machines with good old-fashioned paper ballots. And after all this, who can blame them?
In the meantime, we’ve got more questions than answers. Why did Raffensperger hide the report? Why won’t he install the security patches? And just how secure are our elections, really?
