Well, it seems like 2024 is shaping up to be quite the year – and we’re not talking about the Olympics. In a twist that reads more like an episode of “House of Cards” than reality, Russia has bestowed upon Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) the dubious honor of being added to their list of “extremists and terrorists.”
This all started when Graham had the audacity – or the common sense, depending on who you ask – to suggest that Russia should be designated a state sponsor of terrorism. Quite the bold move, don’t you think? But hey, let’s not forget that Graham is a man known for his penchant for penalties against Russia. He’s no stranger to stirring the pot.
Responding to this listing with characteristic humor, Graham said: “There goes all my rubles!” Oh, and he didn’t stop there. He raised the stakes by saying, “I call your ‘terrorists and extremists’ bid and raise you ‘State Sponsor of Terrorism under U.S. law.’ Believe it or not, 2024 is going to be a bad year for Putin’s Russia.” You’ve got to admit, the man knows how to make a statement.
Graham’s seemingly controversial comments were provoked by the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who Graham alleges was “murdered” by Putin. Graham urged for Moscow to face consequences, proposing that Russia be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism under U.S. law. This would permit Navalny’s family to sue Putin’s Russia in U.S. court for the killing of their loved one and could potentially lead to more sanctions.
In response to these allegations, the White House announced that new sanctions against Russia will be unveiled on Friday. Meanwhile, Graham continues to stand his ground, even boasting about being a wanted man in Russia. He declared that he’ll stand with Ukraine “until every Russian soldier is expelled from Ukrainian territory.”
But perhaps the most dramatic part of this saga was Graham’s challenge to Putin: “I will submit to jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court if you do,” he said. “Come and make your best case. See you in The Hague!”
So, while we can’t predict what the rest of 2024 has in store, it seems like Graham is ready for a showdown. And who knows? Maybe being on Russia’s “extremist and terrorist” list is the new badge of honor for those who aren’t afraid to call out the Kremlin.
