Another Gym Goes Woke, Bans US Flags for Most of Year…Yet Allows Pride/BLM

Following the woke example of Planet Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness Center has implemented a new policy allowing employees to display Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Pride symbols as expressions of “freedom of expression,” while simultaneously banning the American flag except on designated holidays. This decision, communicated through an internal memo, positions the fitness chain at the heart of a contentious cultural and political battleground.

The memo encourages employees to “bring their full selves to work every day” by wearing apparel showing solidarity with BLM and LGBTQIA+ movements. However, the restriction on displaying patriotic items like the American flag has drawn sharp criticism from many quarters, highlighting a perceived double standard and sparking accusations of anti-American sentiment.

Critics argue that this policy prioritizes specific social and political expressions over national pride, questioning the rationale behind such a selective approach to freedom of expression. The American flag, a symbol of national unity and identity, being relegated to holiday-only status stands in stark contrast to the open endorsement of movements that, while significant, represent specific communities and causes.

This controversy is not isolated. Last year, Target faced intense backlash for its prominent display of Pride merchandise, leading to boycotts and a noticeable decline in sales. The retailer’s decision to limit the availability of LGBT-themed items this year, based on guest insights and consumer research, underscores the delicate balance businesses must strike in navigating social issues. Despite the pullback, Target continues to express support for the LGBTQIA+ community, maintaining a stance that attempts to balance commercial interests with social advocacy.

The financial repercussions of such corporate decisions are evident. Target experienced a 10.5% decrease in online sales compared to the previous year, and its stock prices took a hit following the backlash against its Pride collection. Similarly, Planet Fitness encountered significant fallout after canceling the membership of a woman who photographed a man in the women’s locker room, resulting in a plunge in its stock value.

For 24 Hour Fitness Center, the challenge lies in addressing the uproar while maintaining its commitment to inclusivity and freedom of expression. The policy has sparked a broader conversation about what constitutes acceptable workplace expression and the role of businesses in mediating cultural and political debates. This is a misguided attempt that undermines national pride and creates an unnecessary hierarchy of symbols.
