Tensions over the Israel-Palestine conflict escalated into violence on Thursday evening in Newton, Massachusetts, when a Palestinian supporter was shot after attacking a pro-Israel Iraq War veteran. The confrontation occurred during a protest where around ten pro-Israel demonstrators, including veterans and activists, were waving American, Israeli, and Pahlavi Iranian flags to show solidarity with Israel and raise awareness about hostages taken by the Iranian regime.
The attacker, described as wearing a Palestinian pin and a surgical mask hanging from his neck, aggressively approached the group, shouting insults and accusing them of supporting “genocide.” Witnesses said he called the protesters “sick” as he berated them. Among the group was Scott Hayes, a 47-year-old Iraq War veteran from Framingham, Massachusetts, who became the target of the verbal tirade.
What started as a heated exchange turned violent when the attacker crossed the street, storming through traffic to confront Hayes directly. He reportedly flipped off the group before charging at Hayes, tackling him to the ground while Hayes held an American flag.
As the two men wrestled on the pavement, a gunshot rang out, striking the Palestinian supporter in the stomach. A video angle confirmed that the shot was fired during the scuffle, while the two were still grappling on the ground. Hayes, who legally owned the firearm, discharged the weapon during the altercation, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
The attacker, whose identity has not yet been revealed, was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. District Attorney Ryan confirmed that Hayes had full legal possession of the firearm and acted in the midst of a physical struggle, though the investigation is still ongoing to determine the precise circumstances.
The clash highlights the rising tensions surrounding protests and demonstrations over the Israel-Palestine conflict, even in small communities far from the Middle East. What began as a peaceful gathering in support of Israel turned into a life-threatening encounter, underscoring the deep divisions and passions this issue sparks.
As of now, no charges have been filed against Hayes, but authorities are continuing to review the incident. The shooting has left both sides of the conflict on edge, as emotions run high amidst global turmoil in the region.
