President Trump didn’t hold back on Tuesday when he slammed Kamala Harris for her upcoming trip to the U.S.-Mexico border, calling it a desperate, politically motivated move. Harris, who was appointed the Biden administration’s “Border Czar” back in 2021, plans to visit the southern border later this week as part of her campaign, a trip that Trump argues is far too little, far too late.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump blasted Harris for ignoring the border crisis for nearly four years, only deciding to visit now that the issue has become a major liability for her 2024 campaign. “What a disgrace that she waited so long, allowing millions of people to enter our Country from prisons, mental institutions, and criminal cells all over the World,” Trump wrote. He painted the visit as nothing more than a photo-op, accusing her of trying to “con the public.”
Trump was particularly harsh in his critique of Harris’ management of immigration, accusing her of allowing 21 million people into the U.S. unchecked. Trump claimed this flood of illegal immigration is creating “criminal havoc” and destroying the “very fabric of our Nation.” In typical Trump fashion, he also took the opportunity to remind voters that much of the border wall was built during his administration, and that “it is Wall that WORKS!”
The timing of Harris’ visit comes as her campaign struggles to win over voters on immigration. Recent polling reflects her vulnerability on the issue, with an Associated Press poll showing that Trump is trusted by 45% of voters on immigration compared to just 38% for Harris. The Democratic ticket has faced intense criticism for its handling of the border, with Customs and Border Protection reporting around 10 million encounters and nearly 2 million “gotaways” since Harris took charge.
While Harris’ trip is meant to address concerns, it’s clear her critics aren’t buying it. CNN contributor Scott Jennings argued that this visit “is not going to change” how voters see her. “They don’t trust Democrats on this issue because of the last three-and-a-half years,” Jennings said.
Trump’s border critique is a key part of his campaign, and Harris’ belated visit seems to play right into his narrative. As he put it, “only I can fix it.”
