In a heated debate on The View Wednesday, Whoopi Goldberg and Charlamagne tha God clashed over Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden. The fiery exchange spotlighted the widening divide among Democrats and critics as the pardon continues to dominate headlines and poll numbers plummet.
Charlamagne wasted no time calling out Biden’s move, framing it as a betrayal of the moral high ground Democrats often tout. “Democrats stand on this moral high ground all the time… they act so self-righteous,” he said. He also suggested Biden’s explanation for the pardon—changing his mind over Thanksgiving weekend—lacked credibility. “You really think he just changed his mind over Thanksgiving?” Charlamagne pressed.
Goldberg, a staunch Biden defender, jumped in to counter the critique, arguing there was no evidence Biden lied about his reasoning. “Only because you don’t know that it was a lie,” she snapped. “We don’t know why he changed his mind.”
The sparring intensified as Charlamagne accused Democrats of bringing the controversy on themselves by failing to acknowledge when they fall short. “The moral high ground is nobody’s above the law!” he argued, challenging Goldberg to address the hypocrisy of Democrats campaigning on institutional integrity while pardoning Hunter.
The panel’s Alyssa Farah Griffin chimed in, noting the disconnect between Biden’s actions and the values he championed. “Joe Biden made a point of saying we stand by our institutions… Democrats ran on that,” she said, highlighting how the Department of Justice under Biden had indicted Hunter before the pardon.
Goldberg dismissed the outrage as selective. “Explain to me why it is that when Joe Biden does something, everybody clutches their pearls?” she said, clearly frustrated by what she saw as partisan bias.
But Charlamagne’s point hit home with many viewers: “Why can’t you say when Democrats are wrong? And why can’t Republicans say when Republicans are wrong?”
The controversy has taken a toll on Biden’s public standing. A J.L. Partners poll released Sunday found his approval rating at a dismal 37 percent—a historic low. Over half of respondents (54 percent) believed pardoning Hunter was the wrong decision, with 60 percent saying it undermined confidence in political leaders. Even among Democrats, less than half supported Biden’s move, signaling cracks within his own party.
With Biden’s approval already sagging under inflation, border concerns, and foreign policy challenges, the fallout from this decision has amplified doubts about his leadership heading into 2024.
