It turns out Barack Obama’s famous “team of rivals” philosophy doesn’t extend to Kamala Harris — especially when the presidency is on the line.
According to veteran political reporter Jonathan Allen, the former president worked against his former vice president in the chaotic aftermath of Joe Biden’s exit from the 2024 race. Appearing on MSNBC to promote his new book FIGHT: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House, Allen said Obama didn’t just lack confidence in Harris — he actively maneuvered behind the scenes to stop her from becoming the Democratic nominee.
“President Obama absolutely did not think that Joe Biden should continue,” Allen said. “And he also didn’t want Kamala Harris to be the replacement. He didn’t think that she was the best choice for Democrats, and he worked really behind the scenes for a long time to try to have a mini-primary, or an open convention… he did not have faith in her ability to win.”
Translation: Obama thought Harris was a political dud — and he wasn’t exactly quiet about it behind closed doors.
It’s a striking revelation from a party that has spent the last several years insisting that Kamala Harris was the heir apparent — a historic, progressive icon ready to lead America into the future. But once Biden finally bowed out under the weight of his age and plummeting approval ratings, the Democrat establishment panicked. And at the center of that panic was Obama, frantically trying to rally support for anyone other than Harris.
In fact, Allen says Obama was so determined to stop Harris that he coordinated with Rep. Jim Clyburn — the kingmaker of South Carolina — trying to push a Plan B candidate through a brokered convention. But Clyburn, sensing the winds had shifted, rushed out a Harris endorsement before the call even happened.
To make matters worse, the new book reveals that Biden himself was micromanaging Harris from the sidelines — even after he dropped out. Before a key debate, Biden called Harris and reportedly told her, “No daylight, kid.” In other words: don’t you dare separate yourself from my record, even if it’s the political equivalent of a sinking ship.
The end result? A Harris campaign that couldn’t define itself, couldn’t connect with voters, and couldn’t outrun the shadow of a failed presidency.
Now we know why: she was boxed in by Biden and sabotaged by Obama. What a team.
