Well, things just got a whole lot spicier on Capitol Hill, and not in a good way. Democrat House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is now openly threatening federal agents at the Department of Homeland Security if they dare to arrest his fellow Democrats for, wait for it… storming a federal facility and assaulting ICE officers. That’s not oversight. That’s a crime scene — and Jeffries is acting like it’s a picnic gone wrong.
During a press gaggle on Tuesday, a reporter asked the perfectly reasonable question: “What happens if DHS arrests these Democrat members?” Jeffries’ response? A mafia-style warning: “They’ll find out. They’ll find out. They’ll find out.” He added that DHS agents had “clear lines” they “dare not cross.” In other words, follow the law, and we’ll come for you. This from the guy who lectures us weekly about “our democracy.”
This all started when Newark Mayor Ras Baraka got himself arrested for criminal trespass after storming the Delaney Hall ICE detention center with Reps. LaMonica McIver, Bob Menendez Jr., and Bonnie Watson Coleman. They weren’t there for a quiet visit. According to ICE, they were demanding the release of illegal alien criminals and verbally assaulting agents. And that’s just the polite version.
Tricia McLaughlin, the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at DHS, went on CNN (shockingly) and dropped a bomb: members of Congress, including Rep. McIver, were physically assaulting ICE agents. One bodycam clip reportedly shows McIver shouting, “I touch whoever I want motherf***er!” while attacking officers. Another clip is said to show a female ICE agent being bodyslammed by one of these lawmakers. Yes, bodyslammed.
DHS has confirmed that more arrests are “likely,” and U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced Monday that a federal investigation is already underway. Habba isn’t one to play games. She said her office will review all evidence thoroughly before deciding how to proceed — but make no mistake, criminal behavior by members of Congress will not be swept under the rug.
So, now we’ve got sitting members of Congress behaving like violent protesters and the House Democrat leader threatening retaliation if law enforcement holds them accountable. If this were a group of Republicans, they’d already be in shackles and splashed across every front page from D.C. to L.A.
But when Democrats break the law, the new rule seems to be: “Touch us and there’ll be hell to pay.” Sorry, Hakeem — that’s not how equal justice works. Or at least, it shouldn’t be.
