In a stunning development that hasn’t happened in over half a century, the number of immigrants living in the United States has declined, and it’s all happened since President Trump returned to office in January 2025. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, the overall immigrant population dropped from 53.3 million in January to 51.9 million by June. That’s a decrease of nearly 1.4 million people in just six months.
This marks the first time since the 1960s that the immigrant population has seen an actual decline, rather than continued growth. While the Left will scramble to spin this, the truth is pretty simple: Trump’s immigration policies are working.
Pew’s research director, Dr. Mark Hugo Lopez, admitted that changes in federal policy have significantly slowed the flow of immigrants. He pointed to restrictions during the Biden years, but acknowledged that Trump’s policies, including 181 executive actions targeting everything from asylum loopholes to mass deportations, have had a major impact.
Even Biden’s own restrictions on asylum seekers in late 2024 began to reduce numbers, but it wasn’t until Trump resumed office and actually enforced the law that the decline really kicked in.
By mid-2025, immigrants made up 15.4 percent of the total U.S. population, down from 15.8 percent just five months earlier. That is a massive shift in such a short period of time.
Pew also reported that 750,000 immigrant workers left the U.S. labor force since January. The percentage of foreign-born workers in the labor force now stands at 19 percent, down from previous highs.
As for the unauthorized immigrant population, also known as illegal aliens, that number exploded under Biden but has started to slow due to Trump’s renewed enforcement actions. In just two years between 2021 and 2023, the number of unauthorized immigrants jumped by 3.5 million. But after Trump took office again, deportations and self-deportations have risen.
Mexico remains the top origin country for immigrants, although its share is declining. From 2010 to 2023, Mexican-born immigrants dropped from 29 percent to 22 percent of the total immigrant population. Other countries with large unauthorized populations include Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and even India.
This data confirms what many already knew: President Trump’s policies are restoring order at the border, reducing the strain on U.S. communities, and reversing years of open-border chaos. The numbers don’t lie.
