President Trump is once again doing what career politicians in Washington never could — actually securing the southern border. After years of excuses, delays, and media-driven hysteria, the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection have announced the award of $4.5 billion in contracts to build a new and improved “Smart Wall” across key sections of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Yes, that’s billion with a “B.” And no, it’s not just a fence. This is a serious upgrade.
According to CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott, the Smart Wall represents a revolutionary approach to border security. “For years, Washington talked about border security but failed to deliver. This President changed that,” Scott said. “The Smart Wall means more miles of barriers, more technology, and more capability for our agents on the ground. This is how you take control of the border.”
And he’s exactly right. This is real leadership in action.
The new system includes 230 miles of Smart Wall and nearly 400 miles of advanced technology upgrades. We’re talking steel barriers, waterborne barriers, roads for patrol vehicles, cameras, sensors, and lights. Everything Border Patrol agents need to stop illegal traffic in its tracks. It’s not just physical, it’s digital. It’s the 21st-century wall we should’ve had a decade ago.
Thanks to President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, these projects are the first new contracts since the Biden administration shut it all down in early 2021. This includes areas that had been cleared and funded but were abandoned mid-construction when Biden pulled the plug to appease his open-borders base.
Now the Trump administration is cutting through the red tape. DHS Secretary Noem issued waivers to speed up construction, with 10 massive contracts awarded in just the last two weeks of September. These projects span from San Diego to the Rio Grande Valley and include major upgrades in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Several projects include replacing outdated fencing with brand new Smart Wall segments, as well as building waterborne barriers along the Rio Grande to stop river crossings.
Even better, CBP has launched an interactive map for the public to track progress in real time. That’s called transparency, another thing we didn’t get under the last administration.
This is what real border security looks like. It’s what the American people demanded in 2016, doubled down on in 2020 and 2024, and are finally seeing delivered in 2025. Promises made. Promises kept.
