President Trump just leveled one of those loud, headline-grabbing accusations that gets everyone yelling into their preferred echo chamber. He posted on X that Christopher Wray, “Deranged Jack Smith,” Merrick Garland, Lisa Monaco, and “other crooked lowlifes” signed off on something he calls Operation Arctic Frost, that they spied on Senators and Representatives, taped their calls, and “cheated and rigged the 2020 Presidential Election.” Here is the post, in his own words:
“Just in: Documents show conclusively that Christopher Wray, Deranged Jack Smith, Merrick Garland, Lisa Monaco, and other crooked lowlifes from the failed Biden Administration, signed off on Operation Arctic Frost. They spied on Senators and Congressmen/women, and even taped their calls. They cheated and rigged the 2020 Presidential Election. These Radical Left Lunatics should be prosecuted for their illegal and highly unethical behavior!”
Let’s be blunt and use the proper small print. As of right now, these are allegations. They may be true and the Trump administration may release some hard evidence, but for now they should be treated as such until verified.
That said, if these claims have any basis, they would be profoundly serious, possibly criminal, and worthy of full, impartial investigation. Conservatives who believe in the rule of law, fair play, and limited government should be the first to demand transparency and accountability. It is not partisan to say that wiretapping elected officials without lawful cause would be an enormous abuse; it is a constitutional crisis if proven.
So how should this play out? First, document release. If President Trump says documents exist, those documents should be produced to Congress and the American people, redactions limited where national security actually requires it, not used as a fig leaf. Second, congressional oversight hearings should probe what, if anything, happened. Third, if there’s credible evidence of wrongdoing, the Department of Justice should investigate without fear or favor; and if the DOJ is implicated, an independent special counsel or inspector general should take the lead.
In the meantime, sarcasm aside, conservatives should insist on two things: due process and transparency. Demand the receipts; don’t settle for Twitter thunder. If this is true, prosecute; if it is false, clear the reputations smeared. Either way, America’s institutions deserve answers.
