Former CNN Host Seriously Considering Run for President

If you ever wondered what happens when cable news ego meets political ambition, Don Lemon just gave a pretty clear demonstration. The former CNN anchor is now floating the idea that he could run for president, and not just run, but do a better job than President Trump. That’s not subtle, that’s jumping straight into the deep end without checking if there’s water.

Speaking on the Pod Save America podcast, Lemon admitted he’s thought about it. Not seriously, at least not yet, but enough to say out loud that he believes he could “run this country better than Donald Trump.” That’s a bold claim coming from someone whose background is reading teleprompters and arguing with panelists, not running anything resembling a government.

To his credit, Lemon did acknowledge reality for a moment. He said running could “ruin” his life, which might be the most accurate thing he said during the entire interview. Presidential campaigns don’t exactly come with privacy protections, and Lemon is already dealing with legal issues tied to that incident at St. Paul’s Cities Church. He has pleaded not guilty, but let’s just say that’s not the kind of headline you want while pitching yourself as commander in chief.

Still, Lemon seems convinced that the door is open, partly because he believes the system gives advantages to certain candidates while making it harder for others. That argument isn’t new, but it conveniently skips over the fact that voters tend to look for experience, leadership, and a track record of decision-making under pressure. Hosting a primetime show doesn’t exactly check those boxes.

He even brought up Barack Obama as proof that unlikely candidates can rise to the presidency. That comparison might sound inspiring if you don’t look too closely. Obama was a sitting U.S. senator with years of political groundwork behind him. Lemon, on the other hand, is coming off a media career and a string of controversies. Those are not the same launch pads.

Then there’s the line about needing a “sign” from his creator and the public before jumping in. That’s a nice way of saying he knows this idea would get laughed out of most serious political conversations. And frankly, it would. Running the United States isn’t a side project or a career pivot for someone bored with television.

The most telling part of all this is the mindset. Lemon isn’t talking about policy, strategy, or governance. He’s talking about himself, his belief that he could do better, and his frustration with President Trump. That’s not a campaign platform, that’s a talking point.

At a time when the country is dealing with serious challenges at home and abroad, the last thing it needs is another celebrity deciding the presidency looks like a good next gig. Ambition is one thing. Competence is another.
