AOC is in an absolute panic after a new Twitter account has gone viral. I actually stumbled across it myself yesterday and was caught off guard by it myself. The new account is an AOC account, but it’s not a real AOC account, it’s a parody account. But you’d better believe that she hates it.
“FYI there’s a fake account on here impersonating me and going viral. The Twitter CEO has engaged it, boosting visibility,” the Bronx and Queens Democrat posted. “It is releasing false policy statements and gaining spread. I am assessing with my team how to move forward. In the meantime, be careful of what you see.”
The joke account, labeled “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Press Release (parody),” responded minutes later, mocking the progressive firebrand’s overly serious reaction with its trademark snark.
“After brainstorming with my staff – I’m going to push Congress to make it illegal to joke, laugh, or make fun of me,” it said. “Parody should be illegal.”
“I can’t believe someone would do that to us,” another message from the comedy account read.
The congresswoman noticed a fake Twitter account that had made almost 60 tweets in the past three days. The account had caught her attention because Twitter’s CEO, Musk, responded to one of its Sunday tweets with a fire emoji.
“This might be the wine talking, but I’ve got a crush on @elonmusk,” the message in question read.
Last year, Musk and Ocasio-Cortez engaged in an argument on social media, which was followed by a joke. The congresswoman had linked Musk’s acquisition of the platform to an increase in hate crimes.
A Twitter user asked Musk if his ongoing argument with AOC was a form of flirting. Musk responded that AOC would never date him because he isn’t cool enough. This was after he had previously complimented her taste in lipstick.
On Tuesday afternoon, the impersonator account of AOC posted a message in a fake flirtatious tone, stating that Elon Musk would have a better chance with her if he banned the fake account pretending to be her.
“This is like literally not funny,” the account added, imitating Ocasio-Cortez’s millennial patter.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the fake AOC account had approximately 110,000 followers, which is less than 1% of the real AOC’s 13.4 million followers. Twitter permits parody accounts of public figures as long as they clearly identify themselves in their account name and bio, based on the company’s rules.
The comedy account’s bio is “Saying the quiet part out loud (parody)” and uses the same profile picture as AOC’s official Twitter account.
The genuine congresswoman’s account is verified with a gray checkmark, which shows that it belongs to the government.
On the other hand, the phony account has a blue checkmark, which Twitter grants to Blue subscribers who pay a monthly charge of $8 and own accounts that are not “misleading and deceptive,” according to the company’s information.
UPDATE: It looks like the blue checkmark has been removed, but I’m not sure why yet.
