Well, well, well—look who’s suddenly playing ball with President Trump. Gavin Newsom, California’s ultra-liberal, sanctuary-city-loving, future-Democrat-darling governor, just did something no one expected: he actually vetoed a radical open-borders bill from his own party. That’s right—the man who has spent years posturing as the left’s golden boy on immigration just backed down in the face of Trump’s Department of Justice.
The bill in question, pushed by a far-left Democrat lawmaker, would have banned all local police departments in California from honoring detainer requests from ICE. Essentially, it would have turned the entire state into an even bigger safe haven for illegal aliens, even the ones convicted of serious crimes. But Newsom, ever the political opportunist, took one look at the writing on the wall and decided now was not the time to poke the bear.
Why? Simple—Trump’s DOJ is not the Biden DOJ. Attorney General Pam Bondi has already announced lawsuits against New York Governor Kathy Hochul for refusing to comply with federal immigration law, and Newsom wasn’t about to let California be next. Newsom knew that defying Trump’s crackdown could mean two things:
- Losing billions in federal funding (money California desperately needs, considering its economy is being propped up by Hollywood elites and Silicon Valley tech overlords).
- Having ICE officials flood the state’s streets and clean up its sanctuary cities—which would embarrass Newsom and the entire leftist establishment.
So, instead of sticking to his usual defiance, he chose the safer option: vetoing the bill and pretending it’s about “public safety.”
And let’s be clear—Trump’s deportation plans are no joke. The administration is gearing up for the largest mass deportation program in U.S. history, and cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco are ground zero for the illegal immigration crisis. White House border czar Tom Homan has already warned that major ICE raids are coming, and he’s made it clear: the sanctuary city nonsense is over.
“We need to increase the arrests of illegal aliens, especially those with criminal convictions,” Homan said this week. “So, we’re going to continue. Three times higher is good. The numbers are good. For me, not good enough. We’ve got to get more.”
And now, ICE officials have even more power to do their jobs—new Trump administration regulations allow them to operate in so-called “sensitive” areas like churches and schools. That means nowhere is off-limits for catching criminals who shouldn’t be in this country in the first place.
Newsom, meanwhile, is still licking his wounds from the wildfire disaster, where Trump rightfully called him out for failing to manage California’s resources. Between that and this immigration veto, it looks like “Newscum” (as Trump has so perfectly nicknamed him) is realizing that there’s a new sheriff in town—and his name is President Donald J. Trump.
