In a surprising break from his past partisan tone, former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo—now at NewsNation—took aim at Senate Democrats for their disgraceful treatment of Pete Hegseth, President Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense. During Hegseth’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Democrats, particularly Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), seemed more interested in personal attacks than actual policy discussions.
Cuomo didn’t hold back in his criticism. “My opinion is we saw the enemy today at Pete Hegseth’s Armed Services Committee hearing, and it’s us. Not you, but the toxic game of division played by the people who we put in power,” Cuomo stated.
He’s absolutely right. Americans deserve a Senate that vets nominees based on their ability to serve, not their personal mistakes. But Kaine and his Democratic colleagues didn’t seem interested in that. Instead of asking Hegseth about his plans to handle threats from China, Russia, or global terrorism, Kaine fixated on Hegseth’s personal life, including his past marital issues.
Cuomo called out this ridiculous line of questioning, asking what any of that had to do with leading the Pentagon. “What are you going to do about China, Russia, terror, Pentagon size, drones?” Cuomo asked, pointing out the obvious: these are the real concerns for a Secretary of Defense—not someone’s private family matters.
At one point, Kaine pressed Hegseth about his wedding vows, to which Hegseth responded with restraint, saying, “I will allow your words to speak for themselves.” Hegseth even admitted he wasn’t perfect but was repeatedly cut off by Kaine, who went as far as accusing him of hiding personal details from the Trump administration.
But the most appalling moment came when Kaine invoked Hegseth’s 7-year-old daughter to score political points. Conservative commentator Drew Hernandez summed it up best: “Senator Tim Kaine really did try to use Pete Hegseth’s 7-year-old daughter against him, despicable.”
Even Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) called out the Democrats for their disgraceful tactics. Instead of focusing on national security, Senate Democrats proved once again that their priority is personal destruction over public service.
Chris Cuomo deserves credit for calling this out. When even a former CNN analyst sees how toxic and petty the Democrats have become, it’s clear they’ve lost sight of what truly matters. Hegseth’s composure under fire only reinforces why he’s the right choice to lead the Pentagon.
