Judge Drops Ruling That Might Hand Control of Congress to Democrats

Only in today’s America could a deep red state like Utah suddenly end up with a Democrat friendly congressional map, courtesy of a single judge with a pen and a political agenda. Late Monday night, Utah District Judge Dianna Gibson decided that the map approved by the Republican controlled legislature “unduly favors Republicans and disfavors Democrats.” Translation: the state dared to elect too many conservatives, and the left couldn’t stand it.

This ruling wipes out Utah’s existing congressional lines, which gave Republicans control of all four districts, a fair reflection of the state’s overwhelmingly conservative electorate. Now, thanks to Gibson’s intervention, Utah will suddenly have a shiny new Democrat leaning district carved right out of Salt Lake County, the only blue patch in an otherwise crimson sea. It’s a textbook case of judicial activism dressed up as fairness.

The lawsuit behind all this came from the League of Women Voters of Utah and Mormon Women for Ethical Government, two groups that claim to be nonpartisan yet always seem to end up doing the Democrats’ dirty work. They argued that the legislature’s map violated a 2018 redistricting reform measure banning partisan gerrymandering. Funny how that measure only ever seems to be enforced against Republicans. Democrats gerrymander entire states like Illinois and Maryland beyond recognition, and no judge bats an eye. But when Utah’s legislature draws a map reflecting the will of its voters, suddenly it’s a constitutional crisis.

Democrats are popping champagne over the ruling. DNC Chair Ken Martin gushed about how the decision “reflects the diversity and ideological makeup of the state.” Sure, because the ideological makeup of Utah is so diverse that Democrats usually lose by 30 points. What this really means is that Democrats can’t win in Utah the old fashioned way, by convincing voters, so they’ll let a judge hand them a district instead.

Utah GOP Chair Robert Axson said it perfectly: “This is not interpretation. It is the arrogance of a judge playing King from the bench.” Exactly right. Judges are supposed to interpret the law, not redraw maps to favor their preferred party. By tossing out the legislature’s map and replacing it with one written by activists, Judge Gibson just turned Utah’s redistricting process into a political sideshow.

The timing isn’t accidental either. Democrats are on a coast to coast crusade to rig the chessboard before the 2026 midterms. In California, voters just handed map drawing power back to the Democrat dominated legislature, a move expected to net them five more blue seats. Meanwhile, Democrats are already working the courts in Virginia, Maryland, and Illinois to shore up their hold on those states. On the other side, Republicans are trying to fight back in red states like Texas, North Carolina, and Ohio, where at least the maps reflect the actual voters.

President Trump’s team has been focused on ensuring that GOP led states don’t let Democrats redraw the playing field mid decade, but with rulings like this one in Utah, the left is showing exactly how far it’s willing to go to claw back control of the House.

What happened in Utah isn’t fairness. It’s a political hit job dressed up as reform. When a judge in one of the reddest states in the country can rewrite election maps to create a safe seat for Democrats, you’re not watching democracy in action, you’re watching it get hijacked from the bench.
