Kamala Harris has decided against debating President Trump after he agreed to a September 4 debate hosted by Fox News. Harris had been pushing for a debate on September 10, hosted by ABC News—a date that had previously been approved by Joe Biden before his exit from the race.
Trump initially responded to accusations from Harris’s campaign that he was looking for a way out of debating her. In a Truth Social post, Trump confirmed his agreement with Fox News to hold the debate on September 4 in Pennsylvania. The moderators for this debate will be Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. Unlike the June debate between Trump and Biden, which was conducted without a live audience, this event will feature a full arena audience.
The Harris campaign, however, has accused Trump of trying to avoid the originally scheduled debate on September 10. Michael Tyler, Harris’s communications director, released a statement saying, “Donald Trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out. He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on Sept 10.” Tyler added that Harris would be available on either date to speak to a national audience.
This development follows a series of claims from the Harris campaign that Trump was afraid to face her in a debate. They insisted that Trump’s decision to agree to a Fox News-hosted debate was an attempt to find a more favorable setting and audience. Trump countered these claims by highlighting the conflict of interest with ABC, as he is currently suing George Stephanopoulos for defamation regarding statements made about the E. Jean Carroll case.
Despite securing the Democratic nomination through a controversial backroom “roll call” by party delegates, Harris’s refusal to debate Trump on the agreed-upon date has raised questions about her readiness to face Trump. It appears that the political chess game continues, with each side maneuvering for a position that they believe will provide them the upper hand.
As the American public waits for the official debate between these two political figures, the dynamics of this race continue to shift. Both sides are preparing for a showdown that will undoubtedly influence the upcoming election.
For now, the September 4 debate remains on the table, with Trump ready to proceed and Harris’s camp seeking alternatives.
