Karoline Leavitt Shuts Down Tariff Walk-Back Rumors: “Fake News”
The mainstream media is once again grasping at straws, this time pushing a fantasy that President Donald Trump is secretly considering backing off his historic “Liberation Day” tariffs. But on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made it crystal clear: that’s not happening.
As global markets continued their third straight day of turbulence—following Trump’s announcement of double-digit tariffs on over 60 countries—journalists and Wall Street elites scrambled to spin the story. CNBC, Bloomberg, and others floated the idea that the administration might delay or even reverse the tariffs with a 90-day pause. Leavitt’s response? “Fake news.”
“So the White House pouring cold water on this idea… that they are considering a ninety-day pause on tariffs, saying that the president is committed to his tariff regime,” reported CNBC’s Eamon Javers.
In other words, Trump’s not flinching—and the media should stop trying to will it into existence.
The idea of a pause didn’t come out of nowhere. It was first tossed out by none other than billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, a Trump donor who’s suddenly sounding like a Davos delegate. Ackman warned of an “economic nuclear winter” if tariffs aren’t rolled back. Then came Richard Branson, of Virgin Group fame, claiming America is headed for “ruin for years to come” unless Trump surrenders immediately.
Branson even wrote, “The U.S. government must act in the next few hours.” Hours? Please.
Meanwhile, President Trump’s team is seeing exactly the opposite. According to Kevin Hassett, head of the National Economic Council, countries are practically lining up to avoid the pain of tariffs. “We’ve got more than 50 countries in negotiation with the president,” Hassett said on Fox & Friends. “We’ve had a reach-out overnight from Taiwan, and the Prime Minister of Israel is coming today.”
And the president? He’s not just standing firm—he’s doubling down. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump shredded the Wall Street panic crowd and praised those finally coming to the table. He also shared a clip of Fox’s Maria Bartiromo, who nailed it: “President Trump is not going to bend.”
Rates are falling, oil prices are down, and countries that once laughed at America’s trade policies are now scrambling to deal. The tariffs are working—and Trump’s not blinking.
