The Paris Olympics brought plenty of drama this year, but perhaps no moment was as controversial as Algerian boxer Imane Khelif’s participation in women’s boxing. Although Olympic officials declared Khelif fit for the women’s competition, skepticism simmered about the athlete’s biological characteristics. Now, leaked medical records obtained by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia reportedly reveal details that are igniting even more heated discussions worldwide.
According to Aoudia, Khelif’s medical records show results that challenge the IOC’s decision. The comprehensive physical exam included an MRI that reportedly found no uterus, but instead “internal t*sticles” and what doctors described as a “microp*nis” resembling an enlarged cl*toris. Additional tests showed Khelif possesses an XY karyotype—a genetic marker typically associated with males—and that testosterone levels align more closely with male physiology. The report goes on to say that Khelif’s condition appears to be a disorder of s*xual development, a rare but complex situation that medical professionals recommended be addressed with surgical and hormonal treatment to align with Khelif’s gender identity.
SHAME ON @iocmedia
They knew Imane Khelif was a man and still allowed him to fight women.
They promoted and defended violence against women for sports.
They robbed female athletes of their fair shot and put them in immediate danger. pic.twitter.com/ZDcZxL7q4F

As if this wasn’t enough to fuel the fire, the recommendation for psychological support was another point in the report. The revelations have since sparked social media uproar, with both sides of the transgender athlete debate using Khelif’s case to further their own points. To some, it’s evidence of why women’s sports need clearer boundaries to protect fairness; to others, it raises questions about the adequacy of current policies governing gender inclusivity in international sports.
Not one to shy away from hot-button issues, President Trump’s campaign briefly referenced the Khelif controversy in its final pitch to voters. A campaign video released this week showed footage of Khelif’s Olympic victory, set to a narrator lamenting that “everything we cared about fell apart” under the Biden-Harris administration. The ad specifically claims that the current administration is undermining women’s sports by allowing biological males to compete. Trump has previously spoken out against Khelif’s participation in the women’s boxing category, doubling down in a recent podcast interview, where he argued that protecting women’s sports is a priority for him.
