The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, recently admitted that over 85% of migrants encountered at the U.S. southern border are being released into the country, according to three individuals who attended a private meeting with the secretary. This revelation offers insight into the ongoing border crisis under President Joe Biden and Mayorkas’ leadership.
The confirmation came during a private meeting with Border Patrol agents in Eagle Pass, Texas. Bill Melugin, a journalist, reported the information via a tweet, stating that he was awaiting further comment from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). His claim was later confirmed by the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) Union, noting that Brandon Judd, president of NBPC, was present during the meeting.
The border crisis has led to a record-breaking number of encounters in 2022, along with an increase in fentanyl-related crimes. The DHS reports more of these crimes in the past two years than in the previous five years combined. There has also been a significant increase in the flow of illegal immigrants found on the terrorist watch-list under Mayorkas’ tenure, with Republicans claiming an increase of up to 2500%.
This situation prompted Congressional Republicans to initiate an impeachment effort against Mayorkas. They argue that he has failed to enforce federal immigration law, thus violating his oath to uphold the Constitution. They accuse him of lying about the border situation to Congress and the American people on numerous occasions.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R) stated, “I believe Secretary Mayorkas is an abject failure, but it’s not because of incompetence. I believe he has done this intentionally.” He claimed that Mayorkas had lied to him personally and was not a good-faith negotiator, further emphasizing the need for accountability.
The immigration issue continues to be a point of contention, leading to a deepening divide between political parties. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape immigration policies and the political landscape in the United States.
