Well, if there were any lingering doubts about whether Mexico’s leadership respects American sovereignty, President Claudia Sheinbaum just cleared them up—with a flamethrower. On Sunday, Sheinbaum all but endorsed the violent riots that have rocked Los Angeles since ICE agents dared to enforce immigration law. Not only did she defend the chaos, she practically encouraged more of it, threatening the United States with further unrest if we have the audacity to—gasp—tax remittances sent back to Mexico.
You can’t make this stuff up.
Here’s the timeline: ICE conducted several lawful enforcement raids in downtown L.A. on Friday. That’s their job. In response, left-wing agitators took to the streets, turning protests into full-blown riots. Fires were lit, cops were attacked, and property was trashed. It was anarchy, plain and simple. And while Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom twiddled their thumbs and issued soft statements, President Donald Trump sent in the National Guard to put an end to the madness.
But instead of calling for calm, Mexico’s President Sheinbaum took the podium in Mexico City and praised the rioters. That’s right—praised them. “They are not criminals! They are good men and women!” she said, referring to the people throwing bricks at law enforcement and lighting patrol cars on fire. Sheinbaum then turned the dial up to full-blown interference by warning that Mexicans in the U.S. should “mobilize” if America dares to consider taxing remittances.
Let’s be clear: those remittances account for nearly 4% of Mexico’s GDP. They’re a financial lifeline for the Mexican economy—and the majority of that money leaves our country and goes directly to theirs, tax-free. And Sheinbaum thinks the U.S. should just grin and bear it? We’re footing the bill for her broken system, and now she’s threatening unrest on American soil if we put our own interests first?
It’s outrageous.
What kind of ally cheers on domestic unrest in our cities? What kind of “partner” encourages foreign nationals to rise up against the U.S. government because we’re enforcing our laws?
This is what open borders bring—foreign leaders meddling in our affairs, radical activists tearing up our cities, and Democrat mayors more concerned with appeasing mobs than protecting citizens.
President Trump is right to bring in the National Guard. And if Sheinbaum wants to be an adversary instead of a neighbor, then it’s time to rethink the U.S.-Mexico relationship from top to bottom.
