New York Governor Kathy Hochul Deploys 1,000 Troops to NYC

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has significantly increased the presence of the National Guard in the city’s subway system, deploying a total of 1,000 troops to patrol stations ahead of the busy holiday season. The move, which comes as the city expects an influx of 8 million visitors, is part of an ongoing strategy aimed at bolstering safety and reassuring subway riders.

Initially, in March, Governor Hochul deployed 750 National Guard members along with 250 New York State Police and MTA Police personnel to support the NYPD in conducting bag checks at subway entrances. This was in response to rising concerns over safety in the subway system, which has seen various incidents of crime, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. But as New York enters the holiday season, which traditionally sees a surge in tourists and commuters, Hochul has opted to expand this initiative by sending an additional 250 National Guard members, bringing the total to 1,000.

During a press conference, Hochul clarified that the deployment was not in direct response to any specific spike in crime. “I’ll be clear: this is not in response to a specific crime,” she stated. “We’re not seeing a trend that’s alarming. But it’s about continuing a strategy that has proven its success and expanding it to protect even more people.” Hochul emphasized that this increased presence is meant to provide an added layer of security and maintain a sense of safety as the city braces for an influx of visitors during the Christmas season.

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) also announced a significant milestone in its efforts to improve subway safety: 100% of subway cars are now equipped with security cameras. This was part of a plan that began in 2022 and was completed ahead of schedule. These cameras are expected to enhance surveillance, help deter criminal activity, and assist law enforcement in addressing any incidents that may occur.

While overall crime in the subway system has decreased since the pandemic, certain categories of crime still remain concerning, prompting the increased focus on subway security. Last week, the MTA reported its highest ridership since before the pandemic, with 4.5 million riders, further underscoring the need for additional security measures.

Governor Hochul and MTA Chair Janno Lieber both insisted that the increased presence of the National Guard, along with the addition of surveillance cameras, is making progress in improving safety. The hope is that this proactive approach will continue to make New Yorkers and visitors alike feel safer as they navigate the subway system during the busy holiday season.
