Senator Durbin Accidentally Spills Schumer’s Sick Plan in Forcing Government Shutdown

Well, well, what a shocker — a Democrat actually telling the truth on the Senate floor. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, one of the longest-serving Democrats in Washington, accidentally ripped the lid off the left’s cynical government shutdown game plan. In what sounded like a rare moment of honesty, Durbin admitted that Chuck Schumer’s strategy during the shutdown was, quite literally, to “starve children.” His words, not mine.

Durbin was part of a small group of Democrats who finally broke ranks and sided with Republicans after 40 days of political theater that accomplished nothing but pain for American families. Eight Democrats in total decided to stop holding the government hostage and voted with the GOP to reopen it. That includes Durbin himself, along with Senators Fetterman, Kaine, Hassan, Shaheen, King, Rosen, and Cortez Masto. Apparently, reality finally caught up with them — or maybe they just realized the optics of kids going hungry while they played politics were a little too bad, even for the modern Democratic Party.

Durbin admitted that many of his Democrat colleagues were furious with him for supporting the reopening of the government. He said, “Many of my friends are unhappy. They think we should have kept our government closed indefinitely to protest the policies of the Trump administration.” Translation: Schumer and his crew were perfectly fine with punishing ordinary Americans if it meant scoring political points against President Trump. That’s not “resistance,” that’s cruelty dressed up as strategy.

Then Durbin dropped the bomb: “But I cannot accept a strategy which wages political battle at the expense of my neighbor’s paycheck or the food for his children.” In other words, the plan was exactly that — to make families suffer, to hold back paychecks, and to starve out children who rely on SNAP benefits, all so Democrats could make the shutdown look like President Trump’s fault. It’s as disgusting as it sounds, and Durbin, maybe by accident, just said the quiet part out loud.

Even CNN, of all outlets, had to acknowledge the obvious on Sunday night. They admitted that the Democrats “own” this shutdown. Funding for SNAP benefits ran out on November 1st because of what’s now being called the Schumer Shutdown. The same people who love to moralize about “protecting the most vulnerable” were actively cutting off food assistance to those very same people just to play politics.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had to step in and temporarily block a lower court’s ruling that would’ve forced the Trump administration to keep funding SNAP during the shutdown. Schumer, of course, tried to spin the whole mess Monday morning by blaming President Trump and Republicans for what his own party engineered. Classic move — break something, then blame someone else for the pieces.

What Durbin’s comments reveal isn’t just a tactical mistake. They expose the moral bankruptcy of the Democratic leadership. When your strategy involves starving children to make a political point, you’ve officially lost the plot.
