Well, it didn’t take long for President Trump to get back to work fixing the mess that the left has made of our immigration system. After four years of open-border insanity under Joe Biden, Trump is back in the White House and bringing some much-needed common sense to immigration policy. But here’s the best part—he’s not doing it alone. He’s also empowering other leaders to take action, and that’s exactly what Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) is doing with his new bill targeting sanctuary cities.
Tillis, along with nine other Senate Republicans, just introduced the Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act, which would allow victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants to sue jurisdictions that refuse to enforce immigration laws. Finally—some accountability for the leftist politicians who think they can ignore federal law and put Americans at risk.
As Tillis put it, “For far too long, we have watched local jurisdictions in North Carolina and across the country ignore the lawful notification and detainer requests made by ICE agents and instead release dangerous criminals back into their communities, putting innocent lives at risk.” He’s absolutely right. Sanctuary cities have been nothing short of a disaster, shielding violent criminals from deportation and allowing them to walk free in our communities.
His colleague, Sen. Chuck Edwards (R-NC), didn’t hold back either. He pointed out that sanctuary policies have protected hundreds of thousands of criminal illegal immigrants, allowing them to evade consequences for their crimes. And the numbers don’t lie—under Biden’s watch, the illegal immigrant population has surged, and violent crime committed by non-citizens has become a major issue in many sanctuary cities.
It’s no surprise, then, that the Trump administration is making this a priority. Within days of taking office again, President Trump made it crystal clear that sanctuary cities were going to face serious consequences for their lawlessness. A memo from Trump’s acting deputy attorney general, Emil Bove, made it clear that state and local officials must cooperate with federal immigration enforcement—or face potential prosecution themselves. That’s exactly the kind of no-nonsense approach we need after four years of Biden’s weak, lawless policies.
And let’s be honest—this fight is far from over. The radical left is already gearing up to resist Trump’s crackdown, especially in places like New York and Chicago, where Democrat leaders are more interested in virtue-signaling than actually protecting their own citizens. But with Trump back in charge and leaders like Tillis pushing legislation to hold sanctuary cities accountable, real change is on the horizon.
It’s about time.
