Every once in a while someone on the left accidentally wanders into the neighborhood of common sense. That appears to be what happened when Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania decided he’d had enough of the corporate media’s narrative management during a heated interview about the conflict involving Iran and the United States.
For roughly three straight minutes, Fetterman delivered something rarely heard in modern political television, blunt honesty that didn’t neatly fit the preferred talking points. The exchange happened during an interview with CNN host Kaitlan Collins, and it quickly turned into a rather uncomfortable moment for the network.
The conversation centered on President Trump’s military action against Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury. While much of the Democratic Party rushed to criticize the strike and warn about escalation, Fetterman has taken a surprisingly different position. He openly backed President Trump’s decision and made it clear he has no interest in supporting a War Powers Resolution designed to restrict the president’s authority in dealing with the Iranian regime.
That alone already made him an outlier inside his own party. The interview made it even clearer just how far apart he is from the usual script.
During the segment, Fetterman pushed back hard against what he described as the media’s selective outrage. He pointed out that the United States does not intentionally target civilians, while Iran has a long and brutal history of killing its own people.
“And I would remind everybody listening right now, the United States never, EVER targets civilians. Iran does,” Fetterman said. “And they massacred that 35,000 of them just a couple of weeks ago.”
When Collins attempted to interrupt, Fetterman simply kept going. That is not how these interviews usually work. Typically the host cuts in, redirects the conversation, and the guest politely retreats. Not this time.
Fetterman called out what he sees as the media’s double standard. According to him, left leaning outlets have been obsessively focused on a tragic strike involving a hospital while barely acknowledging the far larger atrocities committed by the Iranian government against its own citizens.
“The left media is much more angry about or talking about this hospital,” Fetterman said. “And it is a tragedy. But they didn’t seem to be as concerned about the Iranians massacring tens of thousands of their young people.”
Reports from multiple sources indicate Iran’s crackdown on protesters has been devastating. Iran International reported the regime used chemical weapons that caused breathing problems among demonstrators. Some Iranian officials have unofficially suggested the death toll could reach 30,000. Other estimates vary widely, with the government admitting to over 3,000 deaths while human rights groups claim the numbers may be significantly higher.
Collins attempted to defend CNN’s coverage and pivot back to questions about the hospital strike. Fetterman agreed the tragedy deserved attention, but he also challenged what he sees as an attempt by outlets like the New York Times to frame President Trump’s operation as a disaster.
At one point Collins tried to wrap up the interview. Fetterman immediately noticed.
“Oh, now, you don’t have to cut me off here,” he said.
After being allowed to continue, he calmly clarified that he had never argued against covering the hospital strike, only against ignoring Iran’s far larger crimes.
It was a rare moment on cable news. A Democrat defending President Trump’s military action while scolding the media for pushing a one sided narrative. The reaction from many viewers was simple. Finally, someone said it out loud.
