Well, add this to the list of sentences nobody expected to hear from the Secretary of War this year.
Pete Hegseth confirmed that the process of releasing government files related to UFOs and extraterrestrial life is officially underway. Yes, really. In his first public remarks on the subject, Hegseth joked that alien disclosures were not exactly on his “bingo card,” but said people are already working to declassify everything.
When asked directly whether he believes aliens exist, Hegseth gave the most honest Washington answer you will ever hear. “We’ll see.” At least he did not pretend to have all the answers. Apparently, he is going to find out at the same time the rest of us do.
This all comes after President Trump directed Hegseth and other agencies to release all government files related to aliens and UFOs. According to Reuters, President Trump said he would order the Pentagon and other agencies to begin releasing the information, calling the matter “extremely interesting and important.” He cited strong public interest, which is putting it mildly. Americans have been debating little green men and flying saucers for decades.
The timing is interesting. Former President Barack Obama recently stirred the pot during an interview with podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen. When asked if aliens were real, Obama said, “They’re real, but I haven’t seen them, and they’re not being kept in … Area 51. There’s no underground facility unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States.” President Trump responded by accusing Obama of improperly discussing classified information, saying he “made a big mistake.”
Now the files are supposedly coming.
For years, the federal government has admitted the existence of unidentified aerial phenomena, the new bureaucratic term for UFOs, but has stopped short of confirming anything extraterrestrial. There have been Pentagon videos, task forces, hearings on Capitol Hill, and plenty of speculation. But the average American still feels like the full story has not been told.
Here is the part that actually matters. Transparency. If there are files, release them. If there is nothing there but blurry footage and bureaucratic memos, fine. Let the public see it. The government works for the people, not the other way around. Declassification should not be treated like some sacred privilege.
Do I think there is definitive proof of aliens sitting in a filing cabinet somewhere? There is no publicly verified evidence of extraterrestrial life visiting Earth. That is the honest answer. But there are documented unexplained sightings and military encounters that deserve scrutiny.
If these files finally put rumors to rest, great. If they raise more questions, that will happen too. Either way, sunlight beats secrecy. And if we discover that Washington has been hiding E.T. in a warehouse this whole time, that would certainly be one way to shake up the news cycle.
