In a shocking turn of events, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, along with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ campaign, have slammed former President Donald Trump for his recent remarks about “COVID tyrant[s].” The two prominent Republican figures took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to express their displeasure, marking an unprecedented public rift within the party ranks.
Trump, in a video statement, had lashed out at those he labeled “COVID tyrants,” warning them not to infringe upon Americans’ freedoms. He ominously hinted at upcoming elections while insinuating that left-wing forces were fearmongering over new COVID-19 variants to justify renewed lockdowns and mandates.
In a defiant response, Governor Kemp pointed out that Trump had opposed him back in April 2020 when he decided to reopen Georgia early. Kemp, who led the nation in lifting lockdown measures, noted that while Trump had listened to Dr. Anthony Fauci and echoed media talking points, he had turned his ear to the hardworking Georgians.
“I disagree with him on what he is doing,” Trump said at a White House briefing on April 22, 2020, in response to Kemp reopening his state. “I think it’s too soon.”
Trump later added, “I was not happy with Brian Kemp. I will tell you that.”
“The fact is former president Trump led the opposition to my decision to reopen Georgia — the first state in the country to do so,” Kemp fired back on X. “He may not remember, but I sure as hell do.”
Adding fuel to the fire, the campaign manager for Governor DeSantis sided with Kemp, tweeting, “@BrianKempGA and @RonDeSantis were right, and Donald Trump was wrong.” DeSantis, another governor who had faced Trump’s criticism for reopening his state, has yet to make a personal statement.
This public confrontation comes as Kemp increasingly pushes back against Trump’s claims, especially those concerning the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Despite Trump’s insistence that the election was “stolen,” Kemp maintains that it was not and that Georgia’s elections are secure, accessible, and fair.
The fact is that Kemp and DeSantis are just looking for whatever they can to throw at Trump since he is currently dominating the GOP race. They both have had their feelings hurt and are on the attack.
