When I was growing up, Home Improvement was one of my favorite TV shows. That was back in the day when there were still many good and wholesome shows as part of the normal TV line up. Nowadays, you actually have to do some research to find shows like that. However, Zachery Ty Bryan, who is widely recognized for his role as the eldest son in the show was recently arrested on a DUI charge after he was believed to have fled an accident scene. The actor was taken into custody around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning when law enforcement officers noticed a damaged vehicle they suspected was involved in an earlier mishap that night, according to a report.
According to the police report, Bryan displayed signs of impairment, leading to his arrest and subsequent booking at the La Quinta Sheriff’s Department in California. This arrest, however, was not Bryan’s first encounter with law enforcement – it marked his third such arrest, thereby significantly increasing the severity of the penalty under California law for repeat DUI offenders.
A third DUI conviction in California can lead to serious consequences, including 3 to 5 years of probation, a jail term ranging from 120 days to 1 year, fines between $2,500 to $3,000, a 30-month mandatory DUI School, and a 3-year license suspension.
But Bryan’s legal troubles extend beyond DUI offenses. In October of 2020, the actor was detained for seven days on charges of felony strangulation of his then-girlfriend at his residence in Eugene, Oregon. He later pled guilty to fourth-degree menacing and assault, resulting in three years of probation and an order to complete a batterers intervention program.
Further, in July of 2023, Bryan was again apprehended for a domestic violence incident. Oregon police booked Bryan on felony assault for violating the Abuse Prevention Act by pursuing someone who had previously been granted a restraining order against him.
Despite these legal troubles, Bryan’s acting career has been quite successful. He gained fame in the ’90s for his portrayal of Bradley Taylor on “Home Improvement,” earning several youth awards. After a successful transition to teen roles in the early 2000s with guest appearances on hit shows such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Veronica Mars”, Bryan took a hiatus from acting in 2009 to produce independent thriller movies. He returned to acting in 2022, playing the President’s aide in the Netflix animated superhero television series, “The Guardians of Justice.”
