President Trump may have offered his clearest signal yet about who he believes should carry the Republican banner after his presidency, reportedly telling a group of donors in a private Oval Office meeting that Vice President JD Vance is the leader he wants to see in the White House next.
According to a source familiar with the conversation, President Trump told donors, “At the end of the day, we need to elect JD.” The remarks, first reported by The Washington Post, are being viewed as the strongest indication so far that the president sees Vance as his preferred successor heading into the 2028 presidential election.
While President Trump has frequently praised both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in public, speculation has continued for months over who would ultimately emerge as the leading figure in the Republican Party once President Trump’s time in office concludes. The latest private comments are likely to fuel even more discussion about the party’s future.
Vance has consistently led most early Republican presidential polls, giving him an advantage before any official campaign has even begun. Rubio has also remained a popular figure among Republicans, but he has repeatedly stated that he would support Vance should the vice president decide to run.
President Trump has continued highlighting Vance’s work inside the administration. Speaking during a donor event in Las Vegas on Wednesday, the president praised “the war on fraud led by our great Vice President JD Vance: He’s doing a great job.”
Vance, however, has worked to keep the focus on the administration’s current agenda rather than future political campaigns.
“The president runs this administration: He is the very top of the administration; he makes orders,” Vance said during an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle.” “We, of course, have debates and conversations about what exactly we should do, but when the president of the United States makes a decision, we’re unified in this administration in carrying out that mission.”
Even as attention has centered on Vance, President Trump has continued to heap praise on Rubio. Earlier this year, the president predicted Rubio could become “the greatest secretary of state in history,” crediting him with helping oversee diplomatic efforts involving Venezuela, Cuba, and the Middle East while taking on additional responsibilities within the administration.
President Trump has even floated the possibility of a future Vance and Rubio ticket, describing such a combination as “unstoppable,” although he has never specified who would head that ticket.
Last year, the president also remarked that Vance was “most likely” his successor simply because “in all fairness, he’s the vice president.”
The speculation surrounding 2028 has only intensified in recent months. During last month’s rescheduled White House Correspondents Dinner, President Trump joked about pursuing a fourth term while displaying Trump 2028 merchandise, drawing laughter and renewed conversation about the Republican Party’s long-term future.
Behind the scenes, Vance has quietly strengthened his political position through fundraising efforts. As finance chairman of the Republican National Committee, he has helped oversee fundraising that exceeded $128 million in the committee’s June filing with the Federal Election Commission.

Gruters added that Vance will play a major role in protecting and expanding Republican majorities during the upcoming midterm elections.
Meanwhile, reports that some Republican donors have attempted to elevate Rubio’s national political profile have reportedly frustrated individuals close to President Trump, who view Vance as the natural heir to the America First movement.
“Vice President Vance is the future of the Republican Party, and Marco Rubio is one of his closest friends in the administration,” one Republican operative familiar with President Trump’s political circle said earlier this year. “The divisive stories from some donors trying to cause chaos are not helpful.”
Although no official announcements have been made regarding the 2028 Republican presidential race, President Trump’s reported comments have added considerable momentum to the growing belief that JD Vance is emerging as the leading contender to carry the party forward when the time comes.
