A short video of U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett circulating on social media has generated a new round of attention around the Texas Democrat, this time because some viewers are speculating about her condition while she attended a formal event.
Independent reporter Nicholas Ballasy posted footage showing Crockett wearing a sequined evening gown and walking through a banquet-style venue while holding the arm of a man in a dark suit. Ballasy attempted to question Crockett about the controversy surrounding her recent recognition of singer Chris Brown, but she did not stop to answer.
Social media commenters subsequently claimed Crockett appeared intoxicated or unsteady in the clip. The video itself, however, does not establish whether Crockett had consumed alcohol or was intoxicated. No independently verified reporting has established that she was drunk, and Crockett has not publicly addressed the speculation about her condition.
What can be verified is the controversy Ballasy was attempting to ask her about.
On September 12, Crockett and Democratic Texas state Rep. Venton Jones appeared during Chris Brown and Usher’s R&B Tour stop at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Crockett announced that the artists’ contributions to music were being recognized in the Congressional Record, while Jones presented a Texas state recognition.
“Right now, we are experiencing Black joy to the highest level,” Crockett said during the presentation. “And I wanted to make sure we document that in the Congressional Record.”
The decision drew criticism because of Brown’s legal history. Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in 2009 after attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna. He has faced additional allegations involving violence in subsequent years, with various cases ending in different ways, including dismissal, settlement or dropped investigations.
Jones later apologized for participating in the recognition, specifically addressing women and survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
“First and foremost, I want to acknowledge the women, the Black women, whom my actions have hurt,” Jones said. “I apologize.”
Crockett has not issued a comparable public apology over the presentation. Brown initially thanked both lawmakers and later apologized to Crockett for the backlash directed at her. After Jones apologized, Brown criticized him and said he no longer wanted the state recognition.
The episode comes as Crockett pursues a separate political strategy following her loss to James Talarico in the 2026 Democratic U.S. Senate primary.
Crockett formed FIRE PAC after the primary and has focused much of her political activity on Democratic candidates in Texas and elsewhere. She told The Texas Tribune that she planned to concentrate on down-ballot races rather than campaigning alongside Talarico, despite having announced support for him after the primary.
The newly circulated video adds another layer of social media controversy, but its limitations are important. A brief recording can show Crockett’s appearance, movements and decision not to answer a reporter’s question. It cannot reliably establish intoxication.
The underlying Chris Brown controversy, by contrast, is documented: Crockett participated in recognizing Brown’s career, the decision prompted criticism, Jones apologized, and Crockett has not publicly followed him in doing so.
