Elon is Back! Secures New Role in Trump Administration

Elon Musk is officially back in the Trump administration’s orbit, this time with a mission focused on the future of American military power.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday that Musk will co-lead “Project Meridian,” a new 120-day Pentagon study examining how warfare could change in the coming decades and what weapons, technologies and capabilities American troops will need to maintain an advantage over foreign adversaries.

Musk won’t be working alone. Anduril Industries founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will co-lead the project, which will operate under Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael.

“The best forecasters of future conflict do not solely reside inside the Pentagon,” Hegseth said during his State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico.

That’s a fairly straightforward observation. Asking the Pentagon to predict the Pentagon’s future without bringing in people from outside the building would be a little like asking Blockbuster executives in 2005 to design the future of entertainment.

Project Meridian is expected to examine future battlefields and determine which emerging technologies deserve greater attention. Hegseth said the group will have 120 days to study future warfare before producing public findings along with a classified annex.

The initiative is not supposed to write America’s next war plan. Instead, its mandate centers on identifying future military domains and capabilities that the Defense Department may need to develop and deploy.

Musk brings an obvious technological background to that conversation. His company SpaceX already has extensive ties to the Pentagon, while Luckey’s Anduril develops autonomous systems and other defense technology. Those business relationships also create potential conflict-of-interest questions as executives associated with major defense contractors help study which technologies the Pentagon should prioritize.

The announcement came as Hegseth unveiled a broader effort to accelerate the military’s adoption of autonomous technology. His plans include a new Autonomous Warfare Command aimed at expanding robotic and autonomous capabilities throughout the armed forces.

For Musk, however, the political significance may be almost as interesting as the technology.

Project Meridian marks his first formal advisory role with the administration since his highly publicized falling-out with President Trump after leaving the Department of Government Efficiency. Axios reported that Musk and President Trump have since reconciled, and Musk was back in Washington this week as the administration convened technology executives for discussions about artificial intelligence.

Musk was also in the audience at Quantico when Hegseth announced Project Meridian.

His return puts one of America’s most prominent technology executives back inside a Trump administration initiative, but with a considerably different assignment from his DOGE days.

Instead of digging through federal bureaucracy and government spending, Musk will now help the Pentagon look years into the future and ask a much bigger question: what will America’s next battlefield look like, and what technology will U.S. troops need when they get there?
