Florida Judge Shuts Down a Famous Rapper’s Lawyer With One Brutal Courtroom Line

Rapper Rick Ross discovered Thursday that celebrity status does not buy much currency in Judge Mindy Glazer’s courtroom.

The rapper, whose legal name is William Roberts II, appeared before Glazer in Miami-Dade Bond Court after turning himself in to Florida authorities on two battery charges stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident.

But it was not the charges alone that sent footage of the hearing circulating online. It was the moment Ross’ attorney tried to invoke his client’s celebrity status and Glazer essentially responded: celebrity who?

According to WWNY-TV, attorney Brad Horenstein asked the court to expedite Ross’ release from the Miami-Dade County Jail, raising concerns about the rapper’s safety while incarcerated.

“Mr. Roberts is a celebrity, and so I don’t know…” Horenstein began.

“What does that mean?” Glazer responded.

That probably was not the reaction the defense attorney was hoping for.

Horenstein explained that Ross was being held in a red jail jumpsuit and asked whether the judge could do anything to accelerate his release because of his public profile and potential safety concerns.

Glazer then addressed Ross directly.

“Hi, Mr. Roberts. I have no idea who you are, except as somebody here in the court who’s going to be treated fairly just like everybody else here,” she said.

And there went the celebrity card, straight into the judicial shredder.

The exchange provided a straightforward reminder of what equal treatment under the law is supposed to look like. Being recognizable to millions of music fans does not automatically entitle a defendant to preferential treatment in court. At the same time, Ross is entitled to the same presumption of innocence and legal protections afforded to every other defendant.

According to the report, Ross faces a felony charge of battery by strangulation along with a misdemeanor battery charge. The allegations have not been proven at trial, and the court appearance concerned his custody and release rather than a determination of guilt.

For Glazer, meanwhile, this is hardly her first viral courtroom moment.

The Miami-Dade judge became an internet sensation in 2015 when she recognized burglary defendant Arthur Booth as a former middle-school classmate. Video showed Booth becoming emotional after Glazer asked whether he had attended Nautilus Middle School.

“Oh my goodness,” Booth responded before breaking down.

Glazer remembered him as a bright student and reportedly told the courtroom that he had been one of the nicest kids in middle school.

Years later, Glazer is once again attracting attention, although under considerably different circumstances.

This time there was no emotional reunion with an old classmate. Instead, there was a famous rapper, an attorney concerned about his celebrity status and a judge who apparently was not keeping up with the Billboard charts.

There is also an important distinction between recognizing legitimate safety concerns and granting preferential treatment simply because someone is famous. Judges routinely have to consider defendants’ individual circumstances, but fame itself does not create a separate class of justice.

Glazer’s response captured that principle in about one sentence.

Rick Ross may command arenas, sell millions of records and have a name recognized around the world.

Inside Judge Mindy Glazer’s courtroom, however, he was Mr. Roberts, another defendant entitled to fair treatment, but not special treatment.
