After the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham and a recommendation by President Trump himself, a replacement has been selected. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced Tuesday that Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, will serve as South Carolina’s interim United States senator following her brother’s sudden death over the weekend.
The announcement came during a 4 p.m. press conference after widespread speculation circulated online regarding who would be chosen to fill the vacancy. Senator Graham, a longtime fixture in South Carolina politics and one of the most recognizable Republican voices in Washington, reportedly passed away Saturday evening after suffering a cardiac event.
Governor McMaster said he approached Nordone about the position early Sunday morning and later discussed the idea with President Trump. According to McMaster, the president strongly supported the appointment.
Nordone expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to continue the work her brother began during his decades of public service.
“I want to thank Governor McMaster and the people of South Carolina for this incredible honor and privilege,” Nordone said. “I will do everything I can to continue serving this state and supporting the agenda that voters elected President Trump to carry out.”
President Trump publicly endorsed the selection earlier in the day, praising Nordone and describing the appointment as a fitting tribute to her late brother.
“I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The appointment also received support from Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who told reporters that the decision “would make a lot of sense” given the circumstances.
Under South Carolina law, the governor has the authority to appoint a replacement when a U.S. Senate seat becomes vacant. Nordone will serve until voters choose a senator through the special election process already scheduled under state law.
While Lindsey Graham spent more than two decades representing South Carolina in the Senate, Nordone has largely remained outside the political spotlight. Nevertheless, she has long been regarded as one of the most important figures in her brother’s personal life.
As Graham’s only sibling, Nordone was frequently mentioned by the senator when discussing family and the challenges he faced following the deaths of their parents. Graham often spoke about the close bond they shared and credited his sister with providing support throughout his political career.
Her appointment creates a rare instance of a Senate seat being temporarily passed to a close family member. Supporters view the move as a way to maintain continuity while South Carolina prepares for the upcoming election.
Because Graham had already secured the Republican nomination for the 2026 general election before his death, state election procedures require a special Republican primary to determine a new nominee. That contest is scheduled for August 11, 2026, with the general election to follow in November.
Several prominent Republican figures have already been mentioned as potential candidates, including Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, U.S. Representative Ralph Norman, and U.S. Representative Nancy Mace. The winner of that election will begin serving a full six-year Senate term in January 2027.
For now, however, the responsibility of representing South Carolina in the United States Senate will rest with Darline Graham Nordone, a woman whose family name has been synonymous with South Carolina politics for more than two decades.
