Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home during an immigration records investigation

MS NOW Concedes Feds May Have Crime Evidence in Long-Running Immigration Fraud Probe

Federal agents searching Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home has created an awkward problem for MS NOW’s coverage. The network’s panel worked hard to present the operation as another political attack by President Trump, but the legal reality kept getting in the way.

A judge had to approve the search warrant. The Associated Press reported that Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out the search Monday morning as part of an ongoing criminal investigation involving questions about immigration paperwork. The Justice Department confirmed that the warrant was judicially authorized, although officials did not release the affidavit or detail the specific allegations.

That is a rather inconvenient detail for anyone hoping to reduce the whole episode to another cable-news morality play. Federal agents cannot simply rummage through a sitting member of Congress’s home because somebody in Washington wants a dramatic headline. The warrant required a finding of probable cause that evidence of a crime could be located there.

MS NOW justice and intelligence reporter Ken Dilanian acknowledged that threshold during the network’s coverage. He said the investigation reportedly concerns immigration paperwork completed when Omar was a child, including questions about her immigration history, legal status, and whether paperwork filed when her family arrived as refugees was proper.

Dilanian also explained that the affidavit is likely sealed under standard procedure. That means the public does not yet know what investigators presented to the court. The warrant does not prove that Omar committed a crime, and she has not been charged. It does, however, mean a judge found the government’s showing sufficient to authorize a search of her residence. Those are not minor technicalities, no matter how often the panel reached for the phrase “right-wing circles.”

The timing has added another layer to the political fight. The search reportedly occurred three weeks before the midterm elections, while Omar is seeking reelection next month. Democratic congressional leaders questioned why the Justice Department approved such a public investigative step so close to the election.

Omar has denied wrongdoing and accused the administration of targeting political enemies and weaponizing federal law enforcement. She said President Trump had spent years directing attacks and accusations at her, and she vowed the search would not silence her. Her House office called the operation political intimidation and said her family was safe.

Meanwhile, Border Czar Tom Homan confirmed last month that a criminal investigation was underway, while declining to disclose its details. The Justice Department has likewise limited its public comments to confirming the warrant and the ongoing investigation.

No one should confuse a search warrant with a guilty verdict. But pretending a warrant for a congresswoman’s home is just an old internet rumor is not serious analysis either. The obvious question remains: what did investigators put before the judge to obtain it? “MS NOW does not know, and neither do we.”
