The political landscape is shifting in ways no one saw coming. Once staunchly anti-Trump, a surprising number of former “Never Trump” voters are now pledging their allegiance to the former President. What’s the catalyst for this dramatic turnaround? None other than Trump’s recent conviction.
In a turn of events that could only be described as sensational, last week’s historic verdict has not only failed to deter some anti-Trump voters but has actually galvanized them. Take Shaun Maguire, a venture capitalist from Los Angeles who once donated to Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Within an hour of the verdict, Maguire shelled out a staggering $300,000 to Trump’s campaign. He’s had enough of what he calls “double standards and lawfare,” declaring that the Democrats are the real threat to democracy.
Maguire isn’t alone. University of Chicago Law School lecturer Adam Mortara, who didn’t vote in 2020 and was critical of Trump during the 2016 GOP primary, is now back in the Trump camp. Why? Because he believes that if Trump doesn’t win by a significant margin, it will validate the weaponization of the judicial system against political opponents. Mortara’s shocking shift highlights a growing disillusionment with what many see as the politicization of the legal process.
And it’s not just the academics and venture capitalists making headlines. Meet Kate Nitti, a self-described lifelong Democrat from New Jersey. Once a fervent supporter of the Democratic Party, Nitti’s faith began to waver during the COVID lockdowns. She even voted Republican for the first time in the 2021 mayoral race. Now, in light of Trump’s conviction, she’s seriously considering pulling the lever for him in 2024. For Nitti, the Democrats’ twisting of the law to “save democracy” has been a step too far.
Texas-based travel consultant Jack MacGuire, another former Clinton supporter, is also all in for Trump now. He describes the trial as showcasing “every level of corruption and deceit” and a willingness to use any means necessary to maintain power. According to MacGuire, the Democrats’ actions have galvanized him to side with the MAGA movement because “this has to end”.
Even more surprising? California-based guitar instructor Emery Barter, who canvassed for Clinton in 2016 and voted for Biden in 2020, is jumping ship. Disillusioned with what he calls “hyper-progressive policies” and a media landscape he feels has strayed from the truth, Barter is now unafraid of Trump. He argues that the narrative of Trump being a threat to democracy is worn out and that sacrificing democracy to stop this supposed threat through “lawfare” is unacceptable.
This wave of support from unexpected quarters is a stark reminder that American politics is anything but predictable. As Trump faces his legal battles, these former “Never Trumpers” are sending a clear message: they’re ready to back the controversial man, viewing him as a necessary disruptor in a politically charged climate.
