A contentious Senate hearing erupted Wednesday as Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) sharply criticized former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Dr. Anthony Fauci during his appearance before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Fauci, who served as one of the leading public health officials during the COVID-19 pandemic, appeared before the committee under subpoena. According to statements made during the hearing, Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights in response to questions concerning his actions and public statements during the pandemic. Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) later told Fox News that Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times throughout the proceedings.
Moreno delivered one of the hearing’s most confrontational moments, accusing Fauci of abusing his authority during the federal government’s response to COVID-19. Expressing frustration over pandemic policies such as lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and mask mandates, Moreno questioned Fauci’s decision-making and its impact on millions of Americans.
“Here I am sitting in front of you six years later, saying, who the f*ck do you think you were for doing that?” Moreno asked during the exchange.
The Ohio senator continued his criticism, arguing that Fauci had become more focused on public recognition than serving the American people. Moreno also condemned Democratic lawmakers who defended Fauci during the hearing, saying voters should closely watch the proceedings and draw their own conclusions.
In a symbolic gesture, Moreno instructed one of his staff members to hand Fauci a copy of the U.S. Constitution. He then asked whether Fauci understood the Fifth Amendment before Fauci again declined to answer, citing the advice of his attorneys.
Moreno also urged Fauci to turn toward individuals attending the hearing whom he said had been negatively affected by pandemic restrictions, including people who lost jobs because of vaccine mandates and children required to wear masks in schools. According to Moreno, Fauci refused to acknowledge them or offer an apology, prompting the senator to call the moment “a disgrace.”
Following the hearing, Moreno posted on social media criticizing Fauci’s repeated invocation of the Fifth Amendment, writing that Americans deserved answers regarding the government’s pandemic policies.
Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) announced that the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee would hold a vote on whether to recommend holding Fauci in contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions during the hearing.
The hearing marked another chapter in the ongoing political debate over the federal government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, with lawmakers remaining sharply divided over Fauci’s legacy and the policies implemented during one of the nation’s most challenging public health crises.
