Rep. Ilhan Omar found herself confronting a familiar and controversial allegation this week after a reporter questioned the Minnesota Democrat about a newly confirmed federal investigation involving her immigration history.
LindellTV reporter Alison Steinberg approached Omar near her congressional office and asked about recent comments from White House border czar Tom Homan, who has confirmed that federal immigration authorities are examining allegations involving Omar.
Steinberg first referenced Omar’s previous statements about nobody being above the law.
“I am not above the law,” Omar responded.
The questioning then turned directly to the allegation that has followed Omar for years.
“Did you marry your brother?” Steinberg asked.
“Absolutely not. What a ridiculous thing to ask… That’s disgusting,” Omar responded.
When Steinberg asked whether Homan was lying, Omar replied, “He is. He’s been saying some dumb sh*t like you.”
The heated exchange comes after Homan publicly confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations is examining allegations involving Omar. Homan has declined to disclose specifics or publicly identify evidence against the congresswoman, citing an ongoing criminal investigation.
The controversy centers on Omar’s 2009 legal marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen. Critics have alleged for years that Elmi is Omar’s brother and that the marriage was connected to immigration fraud.
Omar has repeatedly and emphatically denied that allegation.
Publicly available evidence has not established that Elmi is Omar’s brother, and no criminal charge or official finding has determined that Omar entered the marriage for immigration purposes. Previous reporting into the matter uncovered questions surrounding Omar’s complicated marital timeline but did not establish the alleged sibling relationship.
The issue nevertheless received renewed attention after senior Trump administration officials began publicly discussing federal scrutiny of Omar’s immigration history.
Homan recently said authorities would investigate potential immigration or marriage fraud regardless of the position held by the person involved.
“If someone committed an immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congressman or not, no one’s above the law,” Homan said.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has gone further, publicly asserting that Omar married her brother to bring him into the United States. However, the administration has not publicly released evidence establishing that claim, and Mullin has also said any potential case would have to be proven.
The distinction between an investigation and a finding of wrongdoing remains important. Confirmation that federal authorities are investigating allegations does not establish that those allegations are true.
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019 and became a U.S. citizen in 2000 after arriving in the country as a refugee from Somalia.
For now, the investigation has revived a dispute that has followed Omar for roughly a decade. Federal authorities have confirmed scrutiny is underway, Omar continues to categorically deny the central allegation, and no charges connected to the marriage claim have been announced.
The next significant development will depend on whether investigators uncover evidence sufficient to move beyond an inquiry and into formal legal proceedings.
